Although the bladder lining is inflamed, paradoxically the true cause of FIC is thought not to originate in the bladder but rather in the central nervous system. Cats with FIC have been shown to have an exaggerated stress response due to imbalances in their nervous and endocrine (neuroendocrine) systems.

In some male cats with FIC, urethral blockage may also occur as a result of severe inflammation and spasm of the muscles surrounding the urethra, or if a urethral plug develops. With FIC, many cats develop recurrent episodes of clinical signs.

Can a cat with FIC produce small volumes of urine?

As mentioned in some male cats with FIC, urethral blockage may also occur as a result of severe inflammation and spasm of the muscles surrounding the urethra, these cats may intermittently produce small volumes of urine so we would advise any cat with persistent signs of dysuria or stranguria is assessed by their veterinarian promptly.

When do you Know Your Cat has FIC?

Cats are diagnosed with FIC when they have one or more of the typical symptoms of lower urinary tract disease (e.g., urinating outside of the litter box, straining to urinate, painful urination, producing only small amounts of sometimes discolored urine, and/or frequent attempts to urinate) and other potential causes have been ruled out.

How to diagnose Feline Idiopathic Cystitis ( FIC )?

Special attention will be paid to palpation of the abdomen to feel the bladder. Urinalysis usually is performed to diagnose FIC. Sample collection by cystocentesis in which a needle is directed through the abdominal wall and into the bladder avoids contamination of the urine sample by the urethra or genital tract.
