Loss of appetite in cats, also known as anorexia, can be a sign of a serious underlying disease. The list of potential causes for cats not eating is long and diverse and includes kidney disease, cat flu, diabetes, fever, hyperthyroidism and pancreatitis. Dental problems, pain and internal obstructions may also result in your cat not eating.

If your cat continually refuses to drink, it may end up dehydrated. As the feline body is made up of 80% water, dehydration is dangerous in cats. A cat’s body relies upon water to keep internal organs functioning to capacity. The more dehydrated a cat grows, the more strain will be placed on its body.

Canned food simply has more moisture. According to my vet, this is the easiest way to get your cat to drink more water and avoid a dehydrated cat. If your cat won’t eat wet food, add water or broth to dry food and see if he’ll eat that.
